Ode to the Daffodil

Daffodils that come before the swallow dares,
and take the winds of March
with its beauty.
                                                                   - William Shakespeare, 1564-1616), English Playwright

Daffodil:  flower of the month of March; symbolism of friendship and happiness.  It was during the Victorian Era that the language of flowers developed in response to the restricted mores of the times which frowned upon overt expressions of love and affection.  Messages of ardor were assigned to specific flowers, thus allowing a lover to communicate his sentiments chastely and appropriately.  Although mine are buried under a blanket of snow,  hope springs eternal...
Happy Spring!

J is for Jadeite

Jadeite - that quintessential Depression Glassware - continues to have strong modern appeal.  It came into fashion as a durable and inexpensive alternative to fine china, with its opaque milky green color easily identifiable.  Although Jeanette Glass (1898-1983) is credited with naming Jadeite, several companies produced it including McKee Glass (1853-1951) with its Laurel pattern dinnerware and Anchor Hocking Glass Company with its Fire-King line.  Anchor Hocking actually became the largest producer of heat resistant 'Jade-ite' known as Restaurant Ware from 1950-1956. The simple design, which includes those thick-rimmed 'cheater mugs' still popular in diners today, is timeless.  Due to its sheer abundance, Jadeite pieces can be easily found and purchased fairly inexpensively.  The color graces any decor and has a way of making you smile.
